So long BioWare, we hardly knew you.
Or at least I did. I wasn’t there for your early work. I wasn’t there when you had the Star Wars license (KOTOR mainly, I was there for the MMO Old Republic), I skipped the first Mass Effect, played the second, and, again, skipped the third. I also wasn’t there for most of the Dragon Ages either.
But the few games from BioWare I WAS there for, I really enjoyed. Not just the games themselves but the conversations with other people who’d played those games. Comparing our choices from dialog to decisions to places we chose to visit or the order we did our quests. Whatever it was we had different experiences that gave us more curiosity about what we didn’t do the first time around.
It’s hard for me to write a eulogy for BioWare given how little of their games I played. Given that I did play Anthem, as well. Still, I had hope for every next game they had coming out. When Andromeda failed I figured they’d correct the course for the next Mass Effect. Same for Veilguard – they’ll fix it with the next Dragon Age.
We won’t get those now. Or anything like them probably. We look now to Larian and CD Projekt and Obsidian to take the reins as it were. Though most would say they’ve already done that. And gone further, perhaps.
And so far, we haven’t gotten a new Splinter Cell either. Ubisoft, it’s been 4,815 days since a new Splinter Cell game (non-animated series or guest spot in another game franchise, remake, BBC radio drama, or VR exclusive) was released.
Also, there’s been 12,194 job losses in the gaming industry since January 1, 2026.
